Diamond stitch Shawl

Here are some pictures of the diamond stitch shawl. This comes from the book Learn New Stitches on Circle Looms and is a beautiful shawl. We made ours with a purple mohair blend. My model has chosen several ways to model this.

Here tied in front. You could also make a small tie to tie it like this.

And over the head - like a hooded scarf for those extra cool days..

This is a quick and easy knit which makes it perfect for last minute gifts. It is beautiful in a mohair for a dressy shawl, but I could also see it made in cotton for a beach wrap - my model notes that it can be tied around the waist in a sort of skirt perfect for wearing with the bathing suit.

Soap sack

Well my baby is turning 5 on the 1st of April and my twins wanted to knit her a spa set. The first part of this was a soap sack designed by my son. He wanted a lacy open design to see the soap through. This is what he did:

Materials:

long loom (blue was used)

worsted weight cotton yarn

crochet hook

Cast on 24 pegs with the Drawstring Cast on Method. This method is from http://loomlady.blogspot.com/ (Please note that this makes a big soap sack, for a smaller one cast on less pegs, I would guess 20 would be ideal)

Row 1-9: Knit

Row 10,12,14: (YO, k2tog) to end of row

Row 11,13,15,16: Knit

Row 17,19,21: (YO, k2tog) to end of row

Row 18,20,22-24: Knit

Row 25: k2tog (eyelet row)

Row 26-29: Knit

Bind off using crochet bind off. Gather bottom and tie it securely off. Weave in all ends. Make a 2 peg icord, weave it through the eyelet row and you are all done. Add a pretty soap and it is the perfect gift! Even for a 5 year old.

Easter Friends

March 20th, 2008

Today I made some Easter egg cozies. This is a pattern from Loom Lore slightly modified to fit the wishes of my children. One strand of fun fur was paired with one strand of regular yarn. The yellow one is a baby chick with embroidered eyes and a beak. The blue one is a bluebird (ok I know bluebirds aren’t blue all over, it is just an Easter egg cozy!) It has a cute triangle tail, bead eyes and a long beak. The last one is a bunny (what? Bunnies aren’t pink and purple?). I used a pompom for the tail made the cute long ears and used beads for the eyes and nose.  He has a matching Easter egg made from a pattern on the same site. These were knitted for the Easter breakfast the kids have at school. They make a breakfast for a classmate and you are supposed to stick a little present in there too. So we decided to knit the little animals. Two will actually be covering hard boiled eggs but the last one has it’s own special egg to sit on. This is  a cute easy quick project - each one took less than a half hour while I was watching tv.  The beaks were made using a crochet chain, but the tail and ears were made using an icord. These are endlessly adaptable - think of all the animals that could be made with this pattern or by modifying it. Make the neck longer and you have a giraffe. Add a cute long nose and you have an elephant. A bit of modification will make any bird you can think of from swans to ostriches. Of course you could just stick with the chicken….  Using fun yarn gives it an extra special kid friendly appeal and the feathery types can be knitted just in flat stitch and still look adorable. Knitting these is almost as fun as making headbands…
